About this project
The challenge
Quintess is a private residence club whose inventory is a collection of individual luxury homes around the world, and it has curated more than 25,000 vacations in them. That makes it unlike most travel booking. There is no interchangeable stock: every home is one specific property, in one place, free on particular dates, and no two are substitutes for one another. Nor do members all see the same thing, because what someone can view and reserve depends on their membership. The site also has two jobs at once, persuading prospective members in public while running the reservation tools existing members depend on.
What we built
We build and maintain it as a custom Ruby on Rails application instead of a content management system with a booking plugin, because very little of it is content and most of it is business logic. The public side runs to more than 400 data-driven pages, each generated from the property data. On the member side, search and filtering spans locations, dates and the attributes that distinguish one residence from another, which is a harder problem than filtering a catalog because the result set is small, unique and shifts with availability. A real-time availability calendar drives reservations, so two members cannot claim the same home for the same dates. Registration and payments are built into the application itself, and multi-level access permissions decide what each member can see and book according to their standing in the club.
The result
The application covers the whole path, from a prospective member finding the club, through registration and payment, to searching the collection and reserving a specific home on specific dates, without handing off to a separate booking system in the middle. Building it as a custom application is what makes that possible, and we have continued developing it with Quintess for years.
